How Do Websites Make Profits?

Even if you are a total newbie, you probably know that the websites can generate revenue thru advertisement. But there is a lot more than that. A good website is an asset like any other business. It can bring profits to its owners for long years and even can outperform huge offline businesses. Let's see what are the main methods a website can generate profits:

• Advertising, PPC Ads, Text Link Ads. This is probably the most popular method. The owner of a popular website can sell advertising directly to advertisers, they can put Adsense or similar banners and get paid per click, they can sell text links thru Text-Link-Ads.com and many more.


• Affiliate Marketing. It is a powerful method of website monetization. The owner of the site promotes various products and services and gets a percentage from the sales or leads.


• Selling Membership. Some sites sell membership to their readers. For example some forums require the users to pay if they want to participate. Many sites provided useful information which is protected in paid memebrship area and so on.


• Selling services. There are sites which sell various services. For example some auction sites or freelance marketplaces charge percentage fee from each deal which is closed thru them. Some classified sites charge fee to these who want to place ads etc.


• Selling related products. Some sites and blogs are created with the only purpose to sell an e-book or other product

There are tens of other methods of monetizaion. What you need to know is what method your site is or will be using so you can estimate the potential profits.

Website investment strategies

As there are many ways to profit from a website, there are many possible strategies for investing in it. All of them can be applied to your own funds or the high yield investment program you manage. It's entirely your choice which strategy or strategies you are going to use.

• Buying and selling (flip-flop) strategy. You can trade websites in a similar way the traders trade stocks. You find a good deal, buy and later sell the site higher. Usually you won't do it straight away however, but after doing some SEO and marketing work on the site. You can easy find sites with good potential covering interesting niches which are not well marketed and SEO-ed. Raising the traffic to such a site and respectively increasing its price is not hard at all.


• Creating and selling. If you can't find good ready sites for sale, but have some ideas, you can simply create them from scratch. Using good guides and freelancer's help you can easy build sites with good potential. Then selling them for a lot more than you have invested in creating is not impossible.


• Creating and running. This works just as the above strategy, but instead of selling the ready site, you can run it to generate profits for you. This works best with sites which work on auto-pilot or whose duties (content creation etc.) you can outsource. Don't forget that you want to create a business and passive investment - not a new job for yourself.


• Buying and running. This is my favorite strategy because it means you are buying real assets. A site which is already developed and has existing visitors could be a golden mine especially after you do some improvements. Again the key is to find sites which are not very well marketed and SEO-ed, so you can buy cheaper. With a little work on them you will be able to double and triple the traffic. If you think this means also to double and triple the revenue, you are on the right way and even more. Usually the sites which are not professionally marketed are not professionally monetized too. You can add monetization methods and increase the profits even more.

Expected profit ranges

It's very hard to give you estimates, as investing in websites is same like investing in real business. It can work great or it can crash down. But even with a conservative approach of buying and running existing websites you can achieve 50% - 100% yearly ROI. Because the sites are usually sold for 12 - 24 months of their revenue, this means 4% - 8% monthly profit.

Imagine how much you can improve these figures if you find under performing sites and improve their conversion.

Where to find websites for sale?

There are popular marketplaces where websites and domain names are offered for sale. Just to name a couple - you can try your luck at Sedo and SitePont.

Have in mind that such markets are full with experienced flip-flop-ers and web investors. The people selling there rare undersell their sites. While the things will go well with fairly priced websites, you will perform much better with under-priced ones. To find such you just need to look for not very professional but very promising sites on the Net and contact their owners. Some are personal sites made for fun and the owners have not even thought about making money (in fact such sites bring their owners only expenses). I am sure you can imagine how happy are some of these webmasters to receive an offer in hard cash for their site.

The things are not always as good and as easy as it may sound, but the truth is the Web offers much better deals than you can find offline. You only need to get familiar with the basic internet marketing concepts and you are ready to cash big profits. Investing in websites is one of the best strategies for creating a high yield fund - the risk is low and the profits are high.

The main problem in the Web is the easy over saturation and over competition of each market niche. Because there are no physical limits each of the websites compete with each and every other site in the same niche. When someone create a good idea, there are at least 100 who will copy it immediately and probably 10 of them will do it better.

Here is one of the advantages of the offline world. The real world business is limited in one or another way by its location and physical restrictions. It usually requires more investments, but with a good idea you can earn money for years without having unlimited competitors. But more on than - in the next chapter!
